How liquidity grab works

How liquidity grab works + a specific example on a chart

One of the most common, yet most powerful manipulations in the markets. You may have experienced it: price breaks through support, everything looks like it’s going to fall… and instead the market turns around and shoots up.

No, it’s not a coincidence. It’s a liquidity grab – a tactic used by big players to get into positions of advantage. In this article, we’ll explain why it happens, how to spot it early – and how you can profit from it.

At the end we will show a real example from the EUR/USD chart and how to use this pattern in prop trading.

What is a liquidity grab?

Institutions (so-called smart money) need sufficient counterparties – i.e. liquidity – to fill their large positions. This is what they find in the places where retail places stop losses – typically above the swing high or below the swing low.

Liquidity grab is a situation where the market these areas:

  • artificially break through,
  • picks up stop lossy retail,
  • activates pending orders,
  • and then quickly turns in the opposite direction.

It’s about fake breakoutthat creates room for larger players to enter the market.

How to recognize a liquidity grab?

Follow these three signs:

  1. Clear liquidity zone – e.g. double bottom or top.
  2. Impulsive puncturebut it’s not continuing the trend.
  3. Immediate rejection of the prize back to the previous structure (so-called rejection candle).

EUR/USD (15min timeframe)

Let’s look at a specific example from the EUR/USD pair.

We see that the market has created a double bottom around a key level. Retail traders are expecting a bounce here – some entering long, others giving stop losses just below the bottom.

The market is returning to the level and and it’s cutting sharply through it – stop losses are activated, liquidity is withdrawn…

And then comes the key moment: a strong bullish candle indicates a reversal.

This is a classic liquidity grab.

On this candle, we could:

  • Enter long,
  • data tight SL under the candle wick,
  • to aim at TP around the previous high or with an RRR of 1:2 to 1:3.

How to use it in prop trading?

In the framework of prop trading success is built on precision, low risk and repeatability.

Setups like liquidity grab allow you to:

  • to enter with small SL,
  • to aim at high RRR,
  • Trade clearly defined structure with confidence.

In addition, this pattern can be easy to backtestwhich is a major advantage when preparing for an EverTrader challenge.

Summary and challenge for you

Liquidity grab is one of the purest manipulation signals in the market – and a great edge for those who can read it.

Start watching it on lower timeframes like M5 or M15.

Create rules for entry, SL and TP.

Backtest it on your own data.

And if you want to grow faster, trade with more capital and train under real pressure, prop trading can open doors for you.
