How to Set Realistic Goals in Evaluation
Every trader entering a prop firm challenge has one goal: to pass and get funded. But this is exactly where FOMO, pressure, and unrealistic expectations tend to creep in. Instead of calmly following your strategy, you end up stressed, switching trading styles, and taking losses.
In this article, we’ll look at how to set realistic goals during your challenge so that you can:
- Stay calm,
- Stick to your trading plan,
- And truly move closer to consistent trading.

1. The Most Common Mental Trap: “I Just Want to Get It Over With”
When traders start the challenge, they often switch into this mode:
“I need to pass this as fast as possible – ideally in just a few days.”
That’s the quickest way into a trap. Suddenly, you start:
- Overleveraging,
- Entering trades without setups,
- Ignoring your plan.
Every trade becomes “the one that decides it all”, every loss a “disaster”, every win a “step closer to the goal”.
The result? Pressure, frustration, and mistakes.
Successful traders don’t chase results. They focus on the process.
2. The Difference Between Outcome and Goal
This is crucial to understand:
Unrealistic goals (focused on outcome):
- “I want to make 8% in a week.”
- “I want to pass in 5 days.”
These sound motivating but are outside your full control. The market can act unpredictably, and your plan may go through a rough patch.
Realistic goals (focused on process):
- “Every entry must follow my strategy.”
- “I won’t exceed 0.5% risk per trade.”
- “I’ll review my performance weekly – based on process, not PnL.”
These kinds of goals build the habits of a professional trader. Most importantly – they’re within your control. You can achieve them every day regardless of market conditions.

3. How to Set Healthy Goals for Your Challenge
Here’s a simple and effective system we recommend to traders during any challenge:
Goal #1: Stick to Your Plan
Every trade must have a clear reason based on your strategy.
No impulsive entries, no revenge trades.
Goal #2: Manage Risk
Set a max risk per trade (e.g., 0.5%).
Most importantly – don’t increase risk after a loss to “make it back.”
Goal #3: Weekly Review
Once a week, sit down and ask yourself:
- Did I follow my strategy?
- Did I take any unnecessary trades?
- Did I react emotionally?
Forget about PnL. Focus on process.
Goal #4: Stay Calm
If you feel pressure or frustration – take a break.
A day off isn’t a setback. It’s an investment in your long-term success as a trader.

4. How to Eliminate FOMO and Pressure
FOMO mostly comes from comparing yourself to others:
“That trader passed in 3 days, and I’m only +1% after a week…”
Pause.
You are not them. You have a different strategy, style, and pace.
Try these rules to reduce pressure:
Daily trade limit – e.g., max 2 quality setups per day
Don’t watch your PnL during the day – watch setups, not money
Mental anchor before entering a trade:
“My goal is not to pass the challenge quickly.
My goal is to trade consistently – just as I will with a live account.”
Paradoxically – the less you focus on the outcome, the faster and more sustainably you’ll get there.
Final Thoughts: Getting Funded Isn’t a Sprint
If you treat the challenge as a test of patience, discipline, and mindset, you’ll trade differently than most – and that’s exactly what prop firms are looking for.
Remember:
- A realistic goal is not the result – it’s the process.
- Success isn’t about speed – it’s about discipline.
- Your job isn’t to “pass as fast as possible.” Your job is to trade as if it were your own money.
